Mavericks Come Up Short Against Jackrabbits

Brookings, SD. – Despite some hot three-point shooting, the Omaha Mavericks women's basketball team came up short falling 77-62 against the South Dakota State Jackrabbits in Brookings, South Dakota. The Mavericks drained a season-high ten three pointers including three from Kennedi Grant.

Leaders For Omaha
Grant and Natalie Bartle paced the Mavericks but it was an equally distributed scoring effort for Omaha with six different players scoring at least seven points. Grant and Bartle both finished with 11 and Bartle hauled in a team-best six rebounds. Grant, Josie Filer and Katie Keitges each drained at least two shots from beyond the arc.

Leaders for South Dakota State
Paige Meyer and Paiton Burckhard both paced the Jackrabbits with 16 points apeice. Meyer was a perfect three-for-three from beyond the arc, while Burckhard drained four threes while hauling in six rebounds.

Team Stats
Omaha shot 40.4 (23-57) percent from the field and 55.6 (10-18) from beyond the arc while South Dakota State shot at a 46.7 (28-60) percent pace while draining 12 shots from downtown. The Jackrabbits also outrebounded the Mavericks 42-29. 

Inside the First Quarter
Omaha started the contest on a 5-0 run with a Mariah Murdie bucket down low and a Keitges three to take the early lead. The Jackrabbits responded with a run of their own rattling off 10 straight to take the lead. The Mavericks drained three shots from beyond the arc in the quarter but South Dakota State would take a 18-13 lead into the second.

Inside the Second Quarter
Sophie Johnston drained the Mavericks fourth three of the game in the second, followed by a Murdie layup to cut the Jackrabbit lead to 23-18. Bartle would later score six straight for the Mavericks to cut the deficit to six, however South Dakota State would take a lead into the break.

Inside the Third Quarter
The Jackrabbits started the third quarter on a 10-1 run pushing their lead to 50-30 with 4:53 left in the period. Omaha would fight back ending the quarter on an 11-0 run including back-to-back threes from Grant to make the deficit 54-44 entering the final quarter.

Inside the Fourth Quarter
South Dakota State would get out to a 64-48 lead with 6:31 remaining before the Mavericks responded with a 9-4 run to cut the gap to just 11 points. The Jackrabbits however would end the game on a 9-5 run on the way to the 77-62 victory.

The Mavericks will have Thursday off before heading to Denver to take on the Denver Pioneers Feb. 19 with tip-off set for 3 p.m. CT.
