Bulldogs Edge Mavericks Wednesday Night

OMAHA, Neb. – The quartet of JJ White, Marquel Sutton, Luke Jungers and Frankie Fidler had double-figure scoring performances, but it wasn't enough for the Omaha men's basketball team to down Drake Wednesday night. The Bulldogs won, 78-65.
 
The Mavericks fall to 3-7 overall.
 
Leaders for Omaha
White poured in a career-high 18 points on 7-of-12 from the field. He shot 50 percent from three-point range, grabbed four boards, and assisted four times. Sutton notched double-figures for the seventh time this season. He tied his career-best with 16 points on 7-of-15 from the field.
 
Fidler nearly completed a double-double with 10 points and eight rebounds. The sophomore forward added three assists and one block. Jungers added 10 points off the bench. He was 2-of-3 from deep.
 
Leaders for Drake
All five starters surpassed 10 points tonight for Drake. Darnell Brodie led the Bulldogs with 17 on 5-of-8 from the field and hit seven from the foul line. Brodie also collected 11 off the glass for a double-double.
 
Garrett Sturtz (14), Tucker DeVries (13), DJ Wilkins (11), and Roman Penn (11) all helped the offense. Wilkins was 3-of-6 from deep, while Penn led Drake with four assists.
 
Team Stats
The Mavericks shot 45 percent to Drake's 46 percent from the field Wednesday. The Bulldogs had two more threes on the night and finished 13-of-16 from the foul line. Omaha only got to the line six times but sunk all six attempts.
 
Omaha's bench led Drakes, 16-12. The Mavericks also held an edge in points off turnovers, 11-10. The Bulldogs outscored the Mavericks in the paint (36-28), on second chance points (16-10), and on the fast break (10-6).
 
Inside the First Half
The Mavericks and Bulldogs battles back-and-forth Wednesday night for a competitive first half. The first points of the night came off an all-effort play by Fidler, Arop, and Sutton. Drake's first lead of the game didn't come until the 16:36 mark, but it was quickly erased with a layup by Sutton on the other end. Over the next five minutes, each team put up 13 points each and forced three ties and three lead changes.
 
Wilkins and Penn hit two straight baskets ahead of the eight-minute mark to swing the lead in Drake's favor for the remainder of the half. The Mavericks got within one with a 6-0 run powered by four points from JJ White, but the DeVries scored the final points of the half. Drake led, 29-26.
 
Inside the Second Half
The Bulldogs came out of the break on a 10-2 run to take their first double-digit lead of the game. Sturtz scored the opening basket that was matched by Sutton on the other end before the next eight points came on the Bulldogs' end. From the 17:22 mark until the 13:13 mark, Omaha responded with a 17-4 run of its own. In the stretch, White had 10 points and capped the run with a three-pointer for Omaha's first lead of the half, 45-43.
 
In the final 10 minutes, the Bulldogs heated up from three connecting on four from deep. The three-point effort helped them put up 26 points during that stretch, while holding Omaha to just 16 points. Drake went on to win 78-65.
 
Game Notes
-White scored a career-high 18 points. It is his fourth game in double-figures this season.
-Sutton's 16 points matches his career-best and is the seventh time he has scored at least 10 in a game.
-Fidler extended his double-figure scoring streak to four games. It is his 24th career double-digit effort.
