Mavericks, Golden Eagles Battle In Final Seconds

OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks took the preseason favorite Oral Roberts squad down to the wire Thursday night in a battle at Baxter Arena. The lead changed six times in the final eight minutes of action, but the Golden Eagles came out on top with a 92-89 win with the help of Max Abmas in the final minutes.

The Mavericks fall to 5-9 overall, 1-1 in the league.

Omaha Leaders
Frankie Fidler led the Omaha scoring efforts with 20 points on the night. A bulk of his production came at the line shooting 11-of-11 from the charity stripe. Four other Mavericks joined him in double-figures. Luke Jungers had 16 points off the bench, while Tony Osburn (14), Marquel Sutton (13), and JJ White (11) produced in the starting line-up. Jungers was 5-of-5 from deep.

Fidler and Akol Arop both crashed the glass for seven rebounds. Fidler also led Omaha with five assists, while White tallied four steals.

Oral Roberts Leaders
Abmas was Thursday's leading scorer with 32 points. He finished the night 6-of-17 from the field with five of those from three-point range. He also went 15-of-17 at the line. Patrick Mwamba (13) and Issac McBride (12) added double-figures for ORU.

Mwamba grabbed a game-high eight rebounds, while Abmas dished out seven assists. Connor Vanover's size inside paid off for seven blocks on the night.

Team Stats
The Golden Eagles had a slightly better night from the field shooting 47.4 percent to the Mavericks' 44.1 percent. Both team's had a hot night from three-point range. ORU hit 16 from deep shooting 59.3 percent, while the Mavericks connected on 10 from the arc shooting 55.6 percent.

Omaha led the night in points in the paint (28-22) and second chance points (13-3). The ORU bench narrowly edged Omaha's, 30-29. ORU also led in points off turnovers (14-9) and on the fast break (17-6).

Inside the First Half
Much of the first half fell in favor of the Golden Eagles, but they couldn't quite shake the Mavericks who kept the first 20 minutes within four by the break. The night started out in Omaha's favor with a jumper from Dylan Brougham inside. The first of three lead changes came on ORU's next possession with a three-pointer from McBride to get the offense going. White and Vanover traded baskets for their teams on the next two trips down the court, and the Golden Eagles would take the lead for the remainder of the half at the 18:08 mark.

Osburn sparked a 6-0 Maverick run at the 16:38 mark with a jumper in the paint. Sutton and Ja'Sean Glover got back-to-back layups tying the game, 10-10, with just under 14 to play. Omaha kept it within one over the next two minutes before DeShang Weaver and Kareem Thompson combined for four three-pointers for a nine-point lead ahead of the eight-minute media timeout. Jungers, Arop, and Fidler came out of the timeout on an eight-point tear to cut the ORU lead back down to one. Another three from deep and a Trey Phipps layup at the 3:33 mark gave the Golden Eagles their largest lead of the night, 40-30. White and Jungers stayed confident under the pressure and got Omaha within six before the half ended. ORU lead at the break, 44-38.

Inside the Second Half
Thursday's result all came down to the final 10 minutes of the second half. Omaha and ORU traded baskets to start the half, and despite a nine-point ORU lead with 16:39 on the clock, the Mavericks continued to battle with the Golden Eagles. The freshman duo of Jungers and Osburn managed to tie the game, 61-61, at the 9:36 mark. Osburn then swung the lead in Omaha's favor with a three at the 8:23 mark.

The next three minutes saw five lead changes and two ties before the Golden Eagles regained control until the end. Sutton completed a three-point play for a two-point Maverick lead before Abmas and Arop exchanged jump shots for lead changes. Jungers would tie the game one more time with 5:51 on the clock. His free throw was followed by an Abmas three for the lead once again. Three-pointers from Jungers and Fidler down the stretch got Omaha within one. Fidler also made two from the line with five seconds left to trail by one, but a foul on Abmas allowed two more from the charity stripe leading to a 92-89 win.

Game Notes
-Thursday marked Fidler's second 20-point performance of the season. He is now on a three-game double-figure scoring streak.
-Jungers joins him on the three-game streak following is 16-point effort tonight. He has made five three-pointers in each of the last two games.
-White's 11 points also puts him on a three-game streak.
-Osburn's 14 points is a career-best, and his second time in double-figures this season.
