OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks wrapped up the calendar year's action Saturday at Baxter Arena with the visiting Roos from Kansas City. The Roos used a 10-0 run powered by RayQuawndis Mitchell and Shemarri Allen to pull away for a 75-59 win late in the second half.
Omaha falls to 5-10 overall, 1-2 in Summit League play.
Omaha Leaders
Marquel Sutton led the Mavericks with 18 points Saturday afternoon. He was 9-of-16 from the field and grabbed a team-high five boards.
Frankie Fidler added 10 points. He continues to shoot well from the foul line going 6-of-8 against the Roos.
Fidler tallied six dimes, while
Kyle Luedtke added five.
Dylan Brougham blocked four shots, and
JJ White made three steals to lead Omaha.
Kansas City Leaders
Mitchell put up a game-high 27 points on 7-of-15 from the field. He scored six from beyond the arc and was a perfect 7-of-7 from the foul line. Allen added 17 points, while Allen David Mukeba recorded 11 points.
Jeff Ngandu led the game with seven boards. He also tallied two blocks and a steal. Allen dished our a team-leading four assists.
Team Stats
The Mavericks shot 44.4 percent from the field and just over 33 percent from three-point range. They shot better at the line than the Roos, 86.7 percent to 76.5 percent. Kansas City had a better day from the field completing nearly 59 percent of its attempts.
Inside, the Roos outscored the Mavericks 34-18. They also held an advantage off turnovers (17-14), second chance points (6-4), and on the fast break (9-1). Omaha bench led Kansas City's, 18-9.
Inside the First Half
Mukeba scored in the first 40 seconds to get things started at Baxter Arena Saturday. His bucket inside held on to a lead for the Roos until late in the first half. Omaha's first points of the game came from the hands of
Tony Osburn from three cutting the lead early, 4-3. It was quickly matched on the other end by Tyler Andrews who drove in for a layup at the 17:21 mark.
The next six minutes only saw points at the foul line as both teams struggled to find an offensive stride. Jevin Sullivan and Micthell broke the spell with back-to-back field goals for the Roos claiming a seven point lead just ahead of the midway point. Sutton and Luedkte then scored five straight for the Mavericks, which included a corner three from the senior guard, and the Mavericks were back within two. The Roos would get the lead back up to seven at the 8:07 mark before an 8-0 run with threes from White and
Ja'Sean Glover swung the lead in Omaha's favor for the first time all game. The Mitchell-Allen duo continued to step up for Kansas City, and the Roos managed a one-point lead at the half.
Inside the Second Half
The second half got started in favor of Omaha with a Fidler free throw and White three-pointer taking a three-point lead. The Mavericks couldn't hang on to the lead for long as back-to-back dunks from Ngandu and Mukeba reclaimed the lead for Kansas City. Omaha kept the game within seven over the next 12 minutes and even cut it down to one point on three occasions.
Akol Arop battled low for a layup at the 8:19 mark bringing Omaha within one for the last time of the game, 52-51.
A late 10-0 run for the Roos blew open the lead to double-figures. Micthell converted on a four-point play sinking the three and free throw for a 13-point lead at the 2:26 mark. The Mavericks couldn't get the game back under ten, and the Roos went on to win, 75-59.
Game Notes
-Glover recorded his first three-pointer as a Maverick.
-Fidler kept his double-figure scoring streak alive. He is now up to four straight games with at least 10.
-Saturday marked Sutton's fifth game this season with at least 15 points for the Mavericks.
