OMAHA, Neb. - For the first time in program history, the Omaha women's soccer team captured the Summit League Title and an NCAA Tournament berth. The Mavericks took on the No. 4 Oral Roberts Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon. The match ended tied 0-0 in regulation with Omaha coming out on top, 3-1, in penalty kicks.
The Mavericks improved to 7-8-6 overall with the draw.
How It Happened
- Omaha held the advantage after the first half in shots leading 7-2. Marissa Gohr tallied a pair on goal in the 14th and 25th minutes, while Reagan Bourgeois had a saved shot in the 20th minute.
- Sophia Green had the closest attempt for Omaha in the 40th minute, nearly taking the lead. Louisa Ramsauer timed her jump perfectly and was able to punch it off the crossbar and avoid the goal.
- Emma Konsmo made her first big save of the match in the 44th minute on Samantha Guzman's strike, and the teams were scoreless at the break.
- Konsmo was tested again early in the second half. She made back-to-back saves on shots from Guzman and Samantha See. She came up big in the 66th, 70th, and 72nd minutes with saves, while Omaha searched for its first offensive attack of the half.
- Emilie Erland's attempt in the 81st minute was the final look for either team, and the championship match headed to overtime.
- The first overtime period saw only one shot from Erland, while Grace Crockett nearly netted a goal for Omaha just 16 seconds into the second. See and Julia Thasaphong each had breakaways for ORU, but Konsmo continued her stellar match in goal, and it headed to penalty kicks.
- Konsmo dove on See's first PK attempt and made the stop, while Bourgeois netted Omaha's.
- Lucio's attempt was also stopped by a diving Konsmo, and Omaha took a 2-0 edge with another make by Kaitlyn Cook.
- Guzman made ORU's first PK, but it was matched by Gohr.
- Gabrielle Abbey went far left of the goal, and the Mavericks clinched the title on her miss, 3-1.
