Game 1 of this weekend's two-game home series with the University of North Dakota goes to the Fighting Hawks. UND defeated the Mavericks 4-1 in tonight's conference opening tilt.
After a quiet and scoreless opening 20 minutes for both teams, UND opened up the 2nd period with a pair goals just 15 seconds apart at 1:52 and 2:07 of the frame. Sophomore forward
Cameron Berg answered back just 53 seconds later to pull Omaha within one of the Fighting Hawks. Unfortunately, after a lengthy challenge review, it was determined that there was no goal due to goaltender interference and the score would remain 2-0.
Trailing 3-0 in the second period, blueliner
Jonny Tychonick blasted home a one-timer from the point with 56 seconds left in the middle frame. Tychonick's first lamp lighter of the season brought the score to 3-1. Sophomore's
Ty Mueller and
Victor Mancini were crediting with the helpers. The assist would be Mancini's first point of the season after being sidelined with an injury for most of the first month of play
The Mavericks held the nation's second leading power play unit to just one goal on six attempts and seven shots tonight.
Omaha and North Dakota will do it all over again in tomorrow night's series finale as the Mavericks will look to secure at least a split with UND. Puck drop slated for 7:07 p.m.
