Mavericks Grab Extra NCHC Point with Shootout Victory

The game might go down in the books as a 3-3 tie, but the Omaha Mavericks pick up huge extra NCHC point with a shooutout victory over the North Dakota Fighting Hawks tonight.

A resilient effort from Omaha tonight started when freshman forward Jacob Slipec tipped home his first collegiate goal just 2:58 into the 2nd period. Victor Mancini had his second assist in as many nights while Ray Fust captured the secondary for his first career point. With 12 minutes to play in regulation, the Mavericks found themselves trailing 2-1 until sophomore forward Ty Mueller equalized the game burying a backdoor shot. The defensive pair of Kirby Proctor and Nolan Krenzen were credited with the helpers. 1:25 later, Senior forward Jack Randl continued his hot start to the season when he scored his team leading 11th goal of the season to put Omaha up 3-2. Tyler Weiss registered his 99th career point with the lone assist and moved one step closer to 100.

An answer back from North Dakota with 6:07 left in regulation would force the game to an extra 5-minute OT period. With no winner after OT, the matter of the extra NCHC point would have to be settled in a shootout. Omaha would win the shootout 2-1 with goals coming from Ty Mueller and Tyler Weiss.

Senior netminder Jake Kucharski had himself a night stopping 40 of the 43 shots he faced, including three in the overtime period.

The Mavericks turn their focus north now for a two-game road series with the Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs next Friday and Saturday.
