The Omaha Mavericks battled for a full 60 minutes but fell 6-3 in tonight's series finale with the No. 1 Denver Pioneers.
The Mavericks and Pioneers were even at 1-1 after the opening 20 minutes.
Jack Randl did what he has done so well all season long and found the back of the net to equalize the contest at 1-1, 10:31 into the 1st period. Randl buried a one-timer off a
Matt Miller pass from below the goal line for his 12th goal of the season (at the time).
Ty Mueller was credited with the secondary assist.
At the 11:44 mark of the 2nd period, Denver's Casey Dornbach scored to extend the Pioneers lead to 4-1 over the Mavericks. Omaha wouldn't go away quietly as
Jack Randl scored his 5th power play goal and NCAA leading 13th lamp lighter of the year with 38 seconds remaining in the 2nd period. Randl finished off a beautiful tic-tac-toe play from
Tyler Weiss and
Matt Miller into a wide open Denver cage. Omaha picked up right where they left off to open the final 20 minutes of regulation.
Matt Miller tipped a saucy lead pass from Mueller 5-hole just 32 seconds into the period pulling the Mavericks within one.
Jonny Tychonick registered his fourth helper of the weekend with the secondary and Mueller secured his third multi-point game of the season.
Denver would go on to pull away scoring a power play goal with 8:23 left in the 3rd period and then an empty net tally with 71 seconds to play in regulation.
Miller extended his goal streak to four games with his 3rd period lamp lighter tonight. It's the first time in his career he has scored a goal in four consecutive games. The Leo, Indiana native becomes the 20th player in program history with goals in four straight games.
The Mavericks return home next weekend and continue NCHC play as they welcome the No. 15 Western Michigan Broncos to Baxter Arena.
