Mavericks Erupt for Seven Unanswered Goals to Take Series Opener over No. 14 Western Michigan

The Omaha Mavericks erased an early 3-0 deficit and used a program tying record seven unanswered goals to help down the No. 14 Western Michigan Broncos 7-6 this evening. Omaha ties a program record for largest deficit erased en route to a victory.

35 seconds after the Broncos took a 3-0 lead, Tyler Weiss blasted home his third goal of the season following a Davis Pennington cross ice feed. Matt Miller registered his first of two assists on the opening Omaha goal. 92 seconds later, Nolan Krenzen used a little puck-luck to find the back of the net for his first of the season to pull the Mavericks within one. The junior blueliner perfectly banked a shot off the end-wall that kicked off Cameron Rowe's pad and over the goal line. NCAA leading goal scorer Jack Randl had the lone assist.

Jacob Guevin's first career goal couldn't have come at a much better time tonight as his rocket one-timer equalized the game at 3-3 just 4:43 into the 2nd period. Defensive partner Jo Lemay and Jake Pivonka picked up the helpers. Omaha would go on to take their first lead of the night, 3:12 later after Cameron Berg finished off a dazzling delight of a play when Tyler Weiss put a spin-o-rama pass right on Berg's stick who then slid the puck 5-hole for his fourth goal of the season. Rookie forward Cam Mitchell registered his first career point with the secondary assist. Omaha continued to keep their foot on the gas pedal as Freshman forward Ray Fust would extend the Mavericks lead to 5-3 just 1:42 later ramming home a loose puck out front. Fust's lamp lighter was the first of his career. Jimmy Glynn and captain Nolan Sullivan inked their names on the scoresheet with the assists. With 5:40 left in the 2nd period, the Mavericks drew a penalty to put them on a 5-on-3 power play for 20 seconds. Just four seconds into the double man-advantage, Jonny Tychonick ripped a one-timer home to put Omaha up 6-3. Cam Berg won the faceoff back to Matt Miller who fed a perfect pass over to Tychonick for his third goal of the season. Tychonick leads all Omaha defenseman with 12 points. Ty Mueller would cap off the Mavericks scoring as he capitalized on the remaining Omaha power play 1:42 later, roofing his fifth twine tickler of the year. Guevin and Pivonka were credited with the helpers on the eventual game winning goal.

"We kind of got punched in the face early there going down 3-0 right off the bat," Omaha head coach Mike Gabinet said. "Those are tough games to come back from but for the guys to respond the way they did and claw back into it and obviously to get the lead and then find a way to hang on and get a big time win against the second place team in the NCHC for three big time points was huge."

The Mavericks power play fired on all cylinders tonight going a perfect 3/3 with seven shots on net. Speaking of firing on all cylinders, 15 different Omaha players found themselves on the stat sheet tonight. Five of those players registered multi-point performances. Blueliner Jacob Guevin (1g, 1a) and forwards Cam Berg (1g, 1a), Matt Miller (2a), Tyler Weiss (1g, 1a) and Jake Pivonka (2a).

The Mavericks and Broncos will do it all again tomorrow night from Baxter Arena. Series finale puck drop slated for 7:07 p.m.
