Mavericks Blank Defending National Champion and No. 1 Denver Pioneers in Road Series Opener

The Omaha Mavericks blank the defending NCAA national champion and top ranked Denver Pioneers on the road tonight behind a trio of 2nd period goals. The victory is the program's first win over a No. 1 ranked Denver team.

"It was an unbelievable performance from our guys tonight," Omaha head coach Mike Gabinet said. "That might be one of the most complete games I have seen here as a head coach. I'm just very proud of the group."

The Mavericks put a season high 16 shots on net in the opening 20 minutes but were unable to find the back of the net. It didn't take them long to get going in 2nd period as it only took Cameron Berg 12 seconds to score the game's first goal. Berg received a centering pass from Tyler Weiss, fired a shot on net and cleaned up his own rebound to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. With 15:06 remaining in the 2nd period, Matt Miller extended the Mavericks lead to 2-0 when he corralled a loose puck in the slot and buried it into a yawning Denver cage. Miller wouldn't stay quiet long as 91 seconds later, he lit the lamp again getting his own rebound and firing it home on the power play to take a commanding 3-0 lead.

Jonny Tychonick was more like Jonny Appleseed tonight as he assisted on all three of the Mavericks goals tonight. Speaking of assists, the primary assist that Tyler Weiss recorded on tonight's first goal was his 100th career point (24 goals, 76 assists). Weiss becomes the 18th player in program history to register 100 career points in a Maverick sweater.

Senior netminder Jake Kucharski secured his 4th win of the season and his first shutout as a Maverick. 22 shots up, 22 shots down. Omaha put a season high 40 shots on Denver's Magnus Chrona this evening.

Tonight's loss for Denver is their first time falling to an unranked opponent at home as the number one team in the country since February of 2005. It's also the first time Denver has been shutout at home since February 17, 2018. On the opposite, tonight's victory marks the third time in program history that Omaha has defeated a defending national champion on the road (Michigan State, 2008 & North Dakota, 2017).

"It was a tremendous effort from the whole lineup. Everybody was great," Gabinet said. "It's been great to see from North Dakota, to Minnesota Duluth to now, the growth that this team continues to show and build. Like I've said all year long, this is such a high character group."

The Mavericks will wrap up this holiday weekend road series with the Pioneers tomorrow night at Magness Arena once again. Puck drop slated for 7:00 p.m. CT.
