OMAHA, Neb. – Vice Chancellor / Director of Athletics Adrian Dowell has announced a multi-year contract extension of head volleyball coach
Matt Buttermore. Buttermore has served as the head coach for the last four seasons.
"We are excited to have
Matt Buttermore leading our volleyball program well into the future," said Dowell. "He has consistently elevated the program highlighted by the 2021 Summit League regular season title and Summit League Championship match appearance while also being honored as the league's Coach of the Year. Matt continues to successfully recruit the incredible talent in our region and our volleyball student-athletes have performed exceptionally well in competition, the classroom and in the community. This extension signifies the importance of volleyball and women's athletics to this institution and our commitment to the program's success."
In a career spanning 11 seasons and two institutions, Buttermore owns a 248-92 record, including a 70-39 mark here in Omaha.
After seven successful seasons at Hastings that included an NAIA National Championship in 2016 and five National Tournament appearances, Buttermore came to Omaha in April 2019. Later that fall, he led the Mavericks to their second Summit League Championship appearance in program history after an upset victory over the No. 1 seed South Dakota in the semifinals.
Following a trip to the conference semifinals during the Pandemic shortened 2020 season, Buttermore coached the Mavericks to a 20-10 record in 2021, including a 16-2 record in conference play to give Omaha its first ever Summit League Regular Season title. This season also saw the Mavericks set a new program record for the longest winning streak in the Division I era with 10 in a row.
For his efforts, Buttermore was named the 2021 Summit League Coach of the Year. That season, he coached the program's first Summit League Player of the Year winner in Sadie Limback, who also became the first Maverick in the Division I era to earn an AVCA All-American Honorable Mention.
Six more Mavericks earned All-League honors in 2021, led by
Sami Clarkson who took home the Setter of the Year award. The year prior, Claire Mountjoy was named the league's Defensive Player of the Year. Overall, the Mavericks have earned 19 All-Summit Team recognitions, three AVCA All-Region honors, two AVCA Team Academic Awards, and five Academic All-Summit honors since Buttermore took over in 2019.
"I am so thrilled to be leading Omaha Volleyball and continuing to help our student-athletes reach their goals," said Buttermore. "Our family loves calling Omaha home, and we are honored to be Mavericks. I am also grateful for the support of Adrian Dowell, Mike West, and the rest of our administration and the University. I'm keen to continue our work together as we make positive steps forward in building our program. Omaha is a special place for volleyball, and we are incredibly excited about what the future holds."
