Mavericks Come Out on Top in Exhibition Tuesday

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha men's basketball played host to Mid-America Christian for its lone exhibition game of the 2022-23 season. Five players scored double-figures to come out on top, 96-71.
 
Leaders for Omaha
Luke Jungers paced the Mavericks with a game-high 22 points on 9-of-14 from the field. He also sank four from deep. Jaeden Marshall (13), Frankie Fidler (13), Marquel Sutton (12), and Tony Osburn (12) each added 10+ points.
 
Kennedy Brown fell short of a double-double with eight points and game-leading 10 boards. Fidler and JJ White dished out six assists. Brown tallied three blocks, and Osburn nabbed the ball twice.
 
Leaders for Mid-America Christian
Tarrance Gaines led the Evangels with 14 points. He was 6-of-8 from the field with two threes. Jasiah Lewis added 12 points and was 5-of-5 from the line, while Quentin Woodson added 11 points off the bench.
 
Eylan Goodwyn grabbed eight boards all on the offensive glass, while Lewis tallied five of MACU's 13 assists.
 
Team Stats
The shot over 71 percent in the first half and finished the game just over 60 percent from the field. They went 9-of-21 from long range with eight of those threes coming in the first half. MACU shot 36.5 percent from the field and were held to 33.3 percent from the arc.
 
Omaha led 32-8 on the fast break and outscored the MACU bench, 44-33. The Mavericks also dominated the paint, 46-28. The Evangels held an advantage in points on turnovers (17-15) and second chance points (15-10).
 
Inside the First Half
The Evangels tested the Mavericks in the first four and a half minutes of Tuesday's action taking the first lead on a pair of free throws from Lewis. Marshall converted on a three-point play the next trip down the court to take the lead for Omaha. Gaines scored on three straight possessions for MACU forcing two more lead changes and a three-point lead with 15:47 on the clock.
 
F. Fidler's three at the 15:29 mark sparked a 17-0 Omaha run. Jungers scored eight points in that stretch, including back-to-back threes. The run was capped by a three from Osburn and Omaha led 23-8 with just over 12 minutes left in the half. The Evangels would get within 10 of the Mavericks on a layup from Seth Hurd at the 8:03 mark. Jungers hit a couple more threes down the stretch. Both gave Omaha a 24-point edge, but MACU was able to get the lead under 20 by the half. Omaha led, 54-36.
 
Inside the Second Half
Out of the break, Clark hit a three for MACU before the Mavericks scored nine straight to take a 26-point lead. They would hit 28-point leads at the 15:17 and 14:17 minute marks on jumpers from Dylan Brougham and Marquel Sutton. The teams traded baskets over the next 10 minutes before Omaha took its largest lead of the game just under the six-minute mark.
 
Jungers sparked a quick 8-2 run with a layup at 8:28. Marshall was fouled on a three-pointer with 5:57 on the clock. He went 2-of-3 to widen the lead to 30 points. Osburn was able to keep it there a little over 30 seconds later with a jumper. MACU scored the next nine points, but Brown and Grant Frickenstein closed out the scoring efforts, and Omaha ran away with a 96-71 win.

The Mavericks open the 2022-23 campaign at defending national champions Kansas next week. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m. in Lawrence on Monday, Nov. 7.
