OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha tipped off the 2022-23 season at No. 5 Kansas Monday night.
Luke Jungers hit a three-pointer early in the second half to keep the Mavericks within seven points of the reigning national champs, but a series of runs by the Jayhawks to close the game clinched the opening night win, 89-64.
The Mavericks fall to 0-1 on the year.
Leaders for Omaha
Jaeden Marshall led Omaha with 13 points on 4-of-9 from the field. He hit two from deep and grabbed four boards. Jungers scored 12 points off the bench. He also had two three-pointers and was 4-of-5 from the foul line. Jungers had a team-leading six rebounds.
Marquel Sutton and
Frankie Fidler tallied 11 points each. Sutton tallied five boards.
JJ White dished out a team-leading six assists.
Leaders for Kansas
Five players scored double-figures for the Jayhawks led by Gradey Dick with 23 points. He was 9-of-13 from the field with four threes. Jalen Wilson notched a double-double with 19 points and 11 boards. He was three assists shy of a triple-double with seven assists.
Bobby Pettiford had 13 points off the bench, while Dajuan Harris and Kevin McCullar had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Team Stats
The Mavericks shot 38.6 percent from the field Monday night, while the Jayhawks shot over 52 percent. Kansas held an advantage on points off turnovers (18-6), points in the paint (48-30), second chance points (15-7), fast break points (22-8), and bench points (22-18).
The Jayhawks controlled the glass, 43-28.
Inside the First Half
The Maverick came out and shocked most of Lawrence Monday night hanging with the Jayhawks through the first and start of the second half. The first four minutes saw two ties and an Omaha 7-5 lead on a pair of free throws from Sutton. At the 15:56 mark, Jalen Wilson hit a triple for Kansas to regain the lead for the Jayhawks.
Kansas wouldn't see its first double-digit lead until the ninth minute of play on a layup from KJ Adams. Twenty seconds after the Adams bucket, Jungers cut it back to single digits, but the Jayhawks got the lead back up to 16 points on three occasions. Jungers hit a buzzer beater three-pointer to trail, 46-33, at the break.
Inside the Second Half
Sutton scored nine seconds out of the halftime break, while Brougham and Marshall scored four straight points to get Omaha within nine at the 17:50 mark. With 16:55 on the clock, Jungers hit a three-pointer on the fastbreak cutting the lead to seven and forcing a Kansas timeout.
Momentum quickly swung in favor of the Jayhawks with a 10-0 run capped with a Gradey Dick dunk. Over the next four minutes, the Mavericks managed to get within 14 points on three occasions, but a 15-0 run in response blew open the lead to 28 points in KU's favor. The Jayhawks would lead by as much as 28 with 4:35 to play. White hit a three for Omaha's final points of the game, and the Mavericks fell, 89-64.
