Strong PK Effort Helps Lead Mavericks to 2-1 Victory over Sharks in Series Opener

The Omaha Mavericks get back to a .500 winning percentage with a gritty and resilient 2-1 victory over the Long Island University Sharks.

Omaha jumped out to an early 1-0 lead when junior forward Jimmy Glynn tapped in a loose puck in the crease just 4:10 into the contest. Glynn's first goal of the 2022-23 campaign was assisted by New York Islanders draft picks Jake Pivonka and Cameron Berg. With 16 seconds remaining in the 2nd period, LIU equalized the game with their lone goal of the evening on the power play.

The game would remain tied until the 14:03 mark of the 3rd period when sophomore forward Ty Mueller made a great hustle play in the offensive zone to win a puck battle, and go down to bury the game winning goal 5-hole against Vinnie Purpura.

While the Mavericks were scoreless in three power play attempts, it was the penalty kill that stole the show. Omaha battled through some questionable calls and went 8-for-9 on the PK tonight. The Mavericks did a great job of getting in shooting lanes and blocking shots along with keeping shots to the outside.

Senior netminder Jake Kucharski had another solid outing. The Erie, Pennsylvania native stopped 21 of the 22 shots he faced, including 10 saves while Omaha was shorthanded.

Omaha and LIU will do it all again tomorrow night to wrap up the series at 6:07 p.m. CT.
