For the second game in a row, the Mavericks erased a multi-goal deficit to force overtime but ultimately fall in a tight battle with Alaska, 3-2.
Omaha found themselves trailing 2-0 with 2:50 remaining in the 1st period when the Nanooks tipped home a shot shorthanded on a 2-on-1 odd man rush. 31 seconds later,
Jake Pivonka blasted home a one-timer on the power play to pull the Mavericks within one. The man-advantage tally was Pivonka's first goal in a Maverick sweater. Defenseman
Davis Pennington and forward
Ty Mueller registered the helpers.
Alaska would take a 2-1 lead a few minutes into the 3rd period until
Matt Miller buried Omaha's second power play goal of the evening at 4:08 of the period. Winger
Tyler Weiss rifled a perfect pass over to Miller who scored the game tying goal at the Nanooks backdoor. Washington Capitols draft pack and freshman blueliner Jo Lemay secured his second point of the season with the secondary assist.
In the overtime period, Omaha had a few chances but were unable to bury. Alaska capitalized on a loose puck out front of the Omaha cage in a mad scramble to take tonight's series opener.
The Mavericks and Nanooks will wrap up this weekend's series on Sunday afternoon. Puck drop slated for 2:00 p.m.
