The Mavericks did what no other team in program history has done tonight. Omaha erased a four-goal 1st period deficit to force overtime and secure a tie with Lake Superior State. It is the largest comeback for the Mavericks since December 18, 2020 when they overcame a 3-0 Western Michigan lead to down the Broncos 6-5 in the NCHC Pod.
The Mavericks didn't get out to the start they wanted tonight facing a 4-0 hole after the opening 20 minutes, but that didn't deter them from continuing to battle the rest of the way. Senior blueliner
Kirby Proctor got things rolling for Omaha when he scored hist first goal of the season off a sharp angled shot 4:46 into the middle frame.
Jake Pivonka and
Jonny Tychonick both registered their second points of the season each assisting on the lamp lighter. With 9:02 to play in the 2nd period, freshman forward
Tyler Rollwagen netted his first collegiate goal when he tipped home a
Jacob Guevin shot from the top of the right circle. A little over three and a half minutes later, sophomore forward
Cameron Berg unleashed a snapshot to the top right side of the twine to score Omaha's lone power play goal of the evening. Alternate captains
Matt Miller and
Jack Randl would nab the helpers.
Down just one goal after 40 minutes,
Jack Randl continued his stellar play this young season when he tipped home the game tying goal with 6:55 left in regulation. 4-4 is where the score would remain until the final buzzer of overtime. Despite being shorthanded for the first 1:13 of the overtime period, Omaha outshot the Lakers 5-1 in the extra frame. For the full game, the Mavericks doubled up Lake State in shots 34-17 including 13-1 in the 2nd period and 9-3 in the 3rd.
Jack Randl secured his 3rd multi-point game of the season, second in a row.
Cameron Berg also went back-to-back nights with a multi-point game as he had the lone assist on Randl's game tying goal.
Omaha returns home next weekend to take on Alaska Fairbanks in a Friday/Sunday series. Friday's game will drop the puck at 7:07 p.m. while Sunday will be a matinee showing of college hockey with a 2:00 p.m. puck drop.
