The Omaha Mavericks grab their first win of the season after downing the Lake Superior State Lakers 3-1 at Taffy Abel Arena in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan tonight.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes, the Mavericks wasted little time lighting the lamp in the 2nd period. Sophomore forward
Cameron Berg fed a saucer pass to sophomore centerman
Ty Mueller who roofed his first goal of the year just 1:50 into the middle frame. Senior forward
Jack Randl was credited with the secondary assist and Berg tallied his first point of the season.
The score would remain 1-0 until the 5:39 mark of the 3rd period.
Tyler Weiss corralled a loose puck off a clearing attempt and went in all alone and buried the game winning goal for Omaha with snipe to the right side of the twine. Freshman blueliner
Jacob Guevin registered his first career collegiate point with the primary assist on the Weiss GWG.
With 1:38 remaining in regulation, alternate captain
Jack Randl added an empty net goal for his second point of the night to secure his second multi-point game of the season. Assisting on the final goal was both Berg (2A) and Mueller (1G, 1A), who ended with multi-point nights tonight as well.
Omaha went 3-4 on the penalty kill this evening while outshooting the Lakers 30-21 in the contest. Senior goaltender
Jake Kucharski nabbed his first win in a Mavericks sweater this evening getting in front of 20 of the 21 shots he faced.
Omaha will wrap up the series tomorrow night with Lake State at 5:07 p.m. CT.
