Miller Goal in Third Gives Omaha Road Win

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Matt Miller is developing a penchant for game-winning goals.

Five of the Omaha sophomore's seven goals this season have been the deciding one in a game, including the one he recorded Saturday to push the No. 16 Mavericks past Colorado College 3-2 at Robson Arena.

Miller scored 98 seconds after the Tigers pulled even on Connor Mayer's goal at the other end. The Omaha winger broke down the right side, sent the puck to Tyler Weiss near center ice and then got it back in time to outrace Mayer to the edge of the crease and beat goalie Matt Vernon with a backhand.

"It was a great pass by Tyler Weiss," Miller said. "I just drove to the net hard. You've got to get pucks to the net. You've got to drive the blue paint. It worked out. I was just lucky enough to finish it off tonight."

It was the second goal of the weekend for Miller and his second game-winner in as many weeks.

"I don't see it as anything different," he said. "When our team needs a goal, it doesn't matter who it is."

Omaha (16-10) dominated the Tigers (7-14-3), statistically, again on Saturday's game as they fired 66 shots, 28 more than Colorado College's 38. The Mavericks had 30-25 advantage in shots on goal, including a 15-5 edge in the first period. This time, however, they got the result they wanted in the end – a crucial NCHC win.

They had to overcome an early Tiger goal to get it. Hunter McKown scored 77 seconds into the game.

Brannon McManus answered, however, later in the period. Omaha never trailed again. Kirby Proctor's goal in the second, also off an assist by Weiss, gave the Mavericks a 2-1 lead that lasted 20 minutes.

Mayer wiped it out when he scored with 11:10 to play. Miller's goal, though, grabbed the lead back.

"[It was a] great character win by our group, especially getting down early there," Omaha coach Mike Gabinet said. "Playing so well again, not getting rewarded early on and just to stick with it, it was really just a big character win by our group."
