Jan 22, 2022

Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. – Omaha opened its season Friday with a pair of matches at Arkansas. And although the Mavericks dropped them both 7-0, they were involved in multiple competitive individual matches.

The Razorbacks picked up the doubles point twice at the Billingsley Tennis Center by claiming two victories. But Omaha was on the verge of closing out a doubles win in the two unfinished matches.

Matt Hulme dropped a second-set tiebreaker, 7-4, in his first match of the season against Alex Reco at No. 1 singles. He then went three sets with Nico Rousset, also an No. 1 singles, in the second go-around.

Freshman Victor Sklenka lost in a 10-3 tiebreak after splitting two sets with Adrien Burdet at No. 4 singles in the first match. Classmate Todd Chen fell 11-9 in a third-set tiebreaker in his second match.

Arkansas, which opened its season with an upset of No. 30 Oklahoma State, got a pair of singles wins from Rousset, Adrien Burdet and Melvin Manuel. Burdet, who recorded three wins for the Razorbacks on the day, was pushed to three sets by Hugo Piles Ballester in his second match after edging Sklenka.

"They were tougher than us today," Omaha coach Matthew Barlow said. "They play aggressively and played together. Hopefully, we learned something from them and can improve for next weekend."

Barlow went with three veterans and three rookies in the first match of the day against the Razorbacks. Junior Alvaro Quintana then slid into the No. 6 singles slot for the Mavericks for the second match.

Omaha is off until next weekend, when it plays host to Washburn twice at the Miracle Hill Tennis Center.
