In a game that it appeared to desperately need to get, Omaha came through with one of its best performances of the season against a top-10 program that has had its number in recent seasons.
The No. 16 Mavericks (15-9) built a 4-0 advantage in the first two periods of their 5-1 victory over No. 7 Minnesota Duluth at Baxter Arena, decisively ending their 12-game winless streak against the Bulldogs.
Brandon Scanlin recorded a goal and two assists, and
Taylor Ward scored on a power play for the nation-leading 11th time as Omaha broke through against UMD for the first time since February of 2018.
Ten different Mavericks tallied at least one point in the team's third victory over a top-10 opponent.
"I'm really proud of the group, unbelievable effort tonight from everybody," Omaha coach
Mike Gabinet said. "When everybody's working like that, playing together as a team and we've got everybody going, good things are going to happen. [This was] one of our most complete games of the season."
Ward said the Mavericks "came to the rink ready to go to war" as their families and former Omaha players looked on during Alumni Night on Parents Weekend. Senior
Tyler Weiss got the crowd into the game early when he backhanded a rebound off his own shot on a breakaway 7:39 into the opening period.
Miller added the first of two power-play goals by the Mavericks to double the lead by the first intermission. Ward scored the other after Scanlin fired in a shot from the point in the second.
"When we play like that and prepare like that, I think that we can play with anybody in the country," Ward said.
Omaha held Minnesota Duluth (13-9-2) scoreless until U.S. Olympian Noah Cates scored during a five-minute power play with 9:03 remaining, spoiling Maverick goalie
Isaiah Saville's bid for a fifth shutout. The junior netminder finished with 27 saves as his team was outshot by the Bulldogs 28-25 in the game.
Chayse Primeau iced the victory for the Mavericks with an empty-net goal in the final minutes. Omaha improved to 5-7 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference heading into a crucial three-week road swing that will go a long way in deciding its postseason fate. Saturday's win sends it off on a positive note.
"We've got guys in that room that are all in," Gabinet said. "We've got guys that are high-character individuals. They want to do well for the program, both individually and collectively. They're all in. They're giving it everything that they've got.
"Sometimes you don't get the results, but it was nice to see tonight. Everybody was good tonight. That was a special game by us tonight."
