LINCOLN, Neb. - Omaha women's soccer upset state rival Nebraska Thursday night in the first ever meeting between the teams. The Huskers recorded an own goal at the 14:22 mark to give the Mavericks a 1-0 edge. The Mavericks put up a defensive effort fighting off 22 shots and held on for the win.
The Mavericks improve to 2-2-0 on the year.
How It Happened
- The Huskers put up an aggressive first half offensively forcing five shots on goal. Less than three minutes into the match came the first from strike from Sarah Weber putting Mia Reedtz Rehde Olesen to work early in goal for her first save.
- At the 14:22 mark, a bit of luck struck for the Mavericks with an own goal by Nebraska to give Omaha a 1-0 edge with 30 minutes left in the half.
- Theresa Pujado forced another Husker shot low left in the 24th minute, but Reedtz made her second stop. Dakota Chan, Haley Peterson, and Florence Belzile all tallied shots on goal before halftime. Reedtz made every save in goal to hold on to the 1-0 lead at the break for Omaha.
- Omaha's first shot of the night came in the 80' minute of action when Sophia Green was blocked by a Nebraska defender. With 10 minutes left in the match, neither team had a shot on target yet in the second half.
- Marissa Popoola forced a sixth save from Reedtz with eight minutes left to play. Chan, Lane, and Peterson would all have shots blocked in the next three minutes of action for the Huskers.
- Despite three more off target shots by the Huskers, Omaha held on for the 1-0 win.
