Erland Nets Early Goal For Season Opening Win

OMAHA, Neb. - Omaha women's soccer beat UNI 1-0 Thursday night to win its home and regular season opener at Caniglia Field. Emilie Erland netted the game winner 27 minutes into the match on a free kick from Andrea Daves.

Omaha starts the year out 1-0 on its home turf.

How It Happened
  • The Mavericks looked to build off last season's momentum in their first match of the 2021 season. Erland and Marissa Gohr forced two shots on target early in the half before Erland found the back of the net in the 27th minute. Andrea Daves set up for a free kick and sent the pass into the goal box. Erland used one touch to the low right to beat the goalkeeper.
  • Avarie Howard and Reagan Bourgeois each put a shot on target before the end of the half, but UNI made the stops in goal. The Mavericks led 1-0 at the break.
  • The Panthers tallied their first shot of the game and of the second half in the 60th minute. Maddie Celarek sent the ball high and wide off target.
  • Kayla Futakami responded seven minutes later with a shot on goal forcing a save by Caitlin Richards. Howard and Sophia Green each tallied a shot before the end of the match, but neither would find the back of the net. Omaha holds on to a 1-0 win.
