Mavericks Split with Kansas City to Close Trip

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Omaha softball team split its last road doubleheader of the season, losing to Kansas City, 5-2, before rebounding for a 9-2 win over the Roos on Sunday afternoon.

The Mavericks, who took three of four games from the Roos on the weekend, are now 15-25 overall and 9-10 in the Summit League while Kansas City is 25-22 overall and 9-11 in the league.

How It Happened
  • The game was scoreless until the third when Jamie White blasted a two-run home run to left.
  • Kansas City's Faith Willis halved the Mavericks lead in the fifth inning with a solo shot to left center field.
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Roos loaded the bases with one out before Sydney Hampton wiffed Lia Lombardini.  But with two outs, Willis hit a three-run triple and then scored on a throwing error to make it, 5-2.
  • Diana Murtha led off the seventh with a single, but the Mavericks couldn't muster any more offense.
Inside The Box Score
  • The Mavericks outhit the Roos, 7-6.
  • Freshman Izzy Eltze went 3-for-3 at the plate, one of five Mavericks to register a hit.
  • Sydney Hampton allowed four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

How It Happened
  • The Mavericks jumped all over the Roos in the first as the first six batters reached base.  Taylor Johnson had the big blow in the inning with a two-run double.
  • The Mavericks played small ball in the sixth, using a combination of singles and walks to stretch their lead to 8-0.  Lexi Burkhardt, Diana Murtha and Sydney Nuismer all had RBI singles in the inning.
  • Kansas City avoided the run rule by scoring twice in the bottom of the six, their first runs in 18 innings against UNO pitcher Kamryn Meyer.
  • Sierra Leonetti made it 9-2 with an RBI single in the seventh.

  • The Mavericks outhit the Roos, 15-4.
  • Sophomore Kamryn Meyer picked up her seventh win of the year, going six innings with just four hits allowed, seven strikeouts and two walks.
  • Meyer finished the weekend with two earned runs allowed in 18 innings after going all 12 innings in Saturday's 1-0 win.
  • Taylor Johnson, Burkhardt and Murtha all had two hits in the game.
The Mavericks return home to finish the regular season, hosting South Dakota on Friday and Saturday, May 7-8, with doubleheaders each day.  First pitch is scheduled for noon.

On Friday, the Mavericks will honor Emma Dargy as part of Senior Weekend festivities.  Dargy, a senior on the 2020 team, did not have a senior day last year due to the COVIC-19 pandemic.  On Saturday, the Mavericks will honor their five current seniors between games.
