Mavericks Advance to Championship with 3-1 Finish in PKs

OMAHA, Neb. - No. 3 Omaha upset No. 2 South Dakota State with a 3-1 finish in a penalty kick shootout to advance to the Summit League Championship. The Mavericks and Jackrabbits played to their third draw of the season finishing double overtime tied, 0-0. In the shootout, Grace Ostergaard, Sophia Green, and Emilie Erland all netted PKs to help Omaha to the upset.

How It Happened
  • The Mavericks wasted no time Thursday night with putting pressure on the undefeated Jackrabbits. Avarie Howard fired the first shot on goal just 31 seconds into the action. SDSU took the next two on goal less than a minute apart. Each team finished with five shots in the first half, but it remained tied, 0-0.
  • The Mavericks outshot the Jackrabbits 7-2 in the second half of the match and nearly took a 1-0 lead with a shot that bounced off the right post in the 66th minute. Neither team got a shot on goal in the final minutes leading to overtime.
  • SDSU tallied two shots on goal in the first overtime in the 98th and 99th minutes. Mia Reedtz Rehde Olesen made both stops to keep it even and force another 10 minutes. This time Omaha's Hannah Heinemann and Grace Crockett got looks on goal, but the decision went to penalty kicks.
  • Grace Ostergaard put the first away for Omaha, while Gabby Vivier-Hannay missed the first for SDSU. Sophia Green took the next for Omaha and tallied a make to give the Mavericks a 2-0 edge.
  • Eden Booker made SDSU's only PK on the team's second attempt. Andrea Daves and Rachel Preston missed the next two, while Emilie Erland netted a third for Omaha. Maya Hansens' miss sealed the deal for Omaha who advances to the championship, 3-1 in PKs.
