OMAHA, Neb. - The Mavericks saw their season come to a close Saturday night with a 3-0 loss to No. 1 Denver in the Summit League Championship. The match marked the second time in program history Omaha appeared in the finals with the last being in 2018. Omaha finishes the year 8-5-5 (8-4-4).
"It is always tough to lose a final, but I was so happy with the response of the team after going down early," said head coach
Tim Walters. "It was a really good fist half of soccer. We were so close to tying the match a couple of times, but then the slip and second goal was just really unlucky timing with five minutes left in the half. I am looking forward to the future with this group. There are so many positives, and they're such a great group to work with."
How It Happened
- Denver put an early goal away for the Pioneers to take an early edge. Natalie Beckman sent a cross pass from the left corner of the field into the goal area to Kaitlyn Glover who used one touch and netting the goal into the bottom right of the net. Just four minutes into the match, Denver went up 1-0.
- Grace Crockett and and Jordyn West fired off shots over the next 30 minutes hoping to connect for the Mavericks. West had a solid look at the 35th minute, but it was blocked by a Pioneer and went off target.
- In the 40th minute, the Pioneers tallied another. Sami Feller applied high pressure defense to an Omaha player forcing a turnover just outside the box. Feller stole the ball to put a second Denver goal away. Pioneers led 2-0 at halftime.
- Meg Halvorson took the first shot of the second half at the 46:30 mark. Denver took another opportunity in the 54th minute that resulted in a goal. Sydney Sharp was assisted by Natalie Beckman and Brittney Lewis.
- Grace Ostergaard recorded Omaha's final shot of the match in the 83rd minute, but the Pioneers held on for a 3-0 win.
