Joey Machado tossed eight strong innings, tying a career-high in Omaha's 2-1 win over BYU on Thursday night at Tal Anderson Field.
Omaha improves to 13-16 on the season while the Cougars drop to 11-18.
How it Happened
- Machado began the game with back-to-back strikeouts and capped the inning with his third after a BYU single.
- Brett Bonar and Grant Goldston opened the bottom of the third with two consecutive singles before Harrison Denk reached on a fielder's choice to bring home Bonar and give Omaha a 1-0 lead.
- Omaha doubled the lead in the third with Mike Boeve's RBI single up the middle, plating Denk.
- The Cougars had the leadoff batter reach base in the fifth and sixth innings until a pair of Maverick doubles plays put a halt to the BYU threat.
- BYU scored its lone run in the top of the eighth on an infield single after a single and a Maverick error.
- Tanner Howe began the ninth in the mound for Omaha, allowing a leadoff double and a sacrifice bunt to put the tying run on third with one out.
- Howe drew a strikeout to get the second out before fielding a squeeze attempt by BYU and firing to first to beat the runner to seal the 2-1 Maverick victory.

- Boeve went 2-for-4 at the plate with a single, double and an RBI.
- Grant Goldston was 2-for-3 with a pair of singles while Masen Prososki and Bonar tallied a hit and Denk added an RBI.
- Machado improved to 3-3 on the year after surrendering an unearned run on six hits and struck out seven Cougars in eight innings.
- Howe tossed the final inning with a strikeout to collect his first save of the season.
