MACOMB, Ill. - Omaha women's tennis snapped a four-match losing streak Sunday afternoon with a win over Western Illinois. The Mavericks downed the Leathernecks 5-2 for their first conference win.
Omaha improves to 9-12 (1-3) this season.
Colby Kelley and
Brooke Covington sparked the Mavericks picking up a win at the No. 2 doubles line, 6-2.
Addison Miller and
Lillian Tiemeyer clinched the point with a 6-2 win at the No. 3 line. The Mavericks jumped out to a 1-0 lead.
Covington kept her momentum going with a win to start singles action. She beat Maria Rybka, 6-3 and 6-0, for an easy Omaha point.
Natalie Lorentz and
Addison Miller won the next two singles to clinch the match for the Mavericks. Lorentz downed Aina Cortina-Pou, 6-1 and 6-4. Miller beat Mara Vidal, 6-1 and 7-5 for the match.
The Mavericks added one more point with a win at No. 4.
Lillian Tiemeyer defeated Lucky Kancherla, 6-2 and 7-5.
"Its was great to pick up a win today," said head coach
Adam Summitt. "The conditions were really tough, but the ladies did a great job on controlling what they could. Western was tough and making a lot of balls, so credit to them for playing well and making a few of our players earn it. Hopefully we are at full streghth this weekend to finish out league play."
The Mavericks wrap up the regular season this weekend with two home matches. First on the slate, Omaha hosts North Dakota Friday, April 16 at 4 p.m. followed by Kansas City on Saturday, April 17 at 3 p.m. Both matches are scheduled for Koch Tennis Center.
