SDSU Tops Maverick Softball

OMAHA, Neb. – The Mavericks closed the weekend's action with another doubleheader with the South Dakota State Jackrabbits Sunday afternoon. Omaha saw their first extra-inning game in the first game. SDSU snuck out a 2-1 win in nine innings. In game two, bats came alive but in the end favored the Jackrabbits, 12-6.
 
With the losses, Omaha falls to 7-20 (2-6) on the year.

How It Happened
  • The Mavericks took the first lead of the first game in the top of the second inning. Sydney Ross tallied the first hit of the game with a single to third. She advanced to second on a throwing error to get into scoring position. Ross was brought home later in the inning on a single from Emily Klosterman that went down the left field line.
  • SDSU tied the game 1-1 in the third inning with a solo homer from Carrillo.
  • Sydney Nuismer entered the game as the DP in the sixth inning. In her second at-bat, Nuismer doubled to left field in the top of the eighth inning. The Mavericks would load the bases, but couldn't convert to take the lead.
  • The Jackrabbits used two hits and a hit-by-pitch to load the bases in the bottom of the ninth. Masterson was walked to bring the winning run home. SDSU wins 2-1.
Inside the Box Score
  • Game one was the first time this season the Mavericks went to extra innings.
  • Hits were even between the teams, 6-6.
  • Jamie White led Omaha with two, while four other players tallied one each.
  • Nuismer and Alexa Sedlak were both 1-for-1.
  • Sydney Hampton pitched a complete game in the circle. She recorded five strikeouts. Hampton falls to 3-6 on the year.

How It Happened
  • SDSU took a quick lead in the first inning with a two-run homer from Halvorson with only one out in the innind.
  • The Mavericks responded with three runs in the second to take a brief lead. Lynsey Tucker brought the first two runs in with a double. Lexi Burkhardt followed suit with a double to plate Tucker for a 3-2 edge.
  • The Jackrabbits added three more to the board in the second to regain the lead. Daugherty and Halvorson each tallied a hit and RBI in the inning.
  • Omaha's next lead came in the top of the fifth with a three-run homer from Sydney Ross. She cleared the bases to give the Mavericks a 6-5 edge.
  • SDSU responded with another three in the fifth and added four more in the sixth with a grand slam from Lenox. SDSU wins 12-6.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Mavericks finished with nine hits in game two.
  • Burkhardt, Ross, and Taylor Johnson all tallied two hits each.
  • Tucker finished with two RBI, while Ross had three.
  • Kamryn Meyer started in the circle and retired nine batters through four innings of work. She falls to 3-8 on the year.
  • Nuismer came in for relief. She tallied one strikeout.
 
On Deck
  • The Mavericks return to Omaha but will play at crosstown rival Creighton for a mid-week match up. The game is set for Wednesday, April 14 at 4 p.m.
