Bats Come Alive in Saturday Sweep at SDSU

BROOKINGS, S.D. – The Omaha baseball team swept South Dakota State in a doubleheader at Erv Huether Field on Saturday afternoon in Brookings, S.D. The Mavericks won 2-1 in game one before collecting a 10-5 victory in game two.
 
The sweep moves Omaha to 12-14 (7-3 Summit League) while SDSU drops to 7-19 (2-8) on the year.
 
Game One: Omaha 2, SDSU 1
How it Happened
  • Richie Holetz allowed a leadoff infield single before retiring the next 13 SDSU batters.
  • Chris Esposito scored the game's first run in the sixth with his Summit League-leading sixth homer of the season to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
  • The Jackrabbits tied the game at one on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded in the seventh to score their lone run.
  • Omaha responded in the eighth when Masen Prososki reached on a single and later raced home from second on Esposito's RBI single up the middle.
  • Tanner Howe drew a lineout before ending the game with back-to-back strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth.

How it Happened
  • Mike Boeve began the game reaching base on an SDSU fielding error before coming home on an RBI single by Esposito to grab the 1-0 lead in the first.
  • Prososki unleashed a two-RBi single through the right side with the bases loaded to extend the Maverick lead to 3-0 in the second.
  • SDSU answered with a pair of runs on an RBI double and RBI single in the bottom of the second to get within 3-2.
  • Parker Smejkal opened the fifth being hit by pitch and later came home on Doran's RBI single to double the Omaha advantage.
  • Boeve drew a walk with the bases loaded to expand the Omaha lead to 5-2 in the fifth.
  • Brett Bonar dropped an RBI single into right center, scoring Esposito in the sixth before Doran unleashed a two-run homer down the right field line to give the Mavericks an 8-2 lead in the sixth.
  • Krumwiede grew the lead to seven in the eighth with an RBI single before the Jacks responded with pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning.
  • Esposito capped the scoring for Omaha with an RBI single in the ninth while SDSU added an RBI double in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the 10-5 win for Omaha in game two.
