WICHITA, Kan. – The Mavericks won their inaugural game at the
Connie Claussen Field Friday afternoon. Omaha hosted Northern Colorado as part of the
Connie Claussen Classic and downed the Bears 10-2 in six innings.
Omaha improves to 5-12 overall.
How It Happened
- The Mavericks came out swinging Friday looking to make a mark on their new turf. Lynsey Tucker led off the first with a single to left field. Allison Helton followed up with a two-run blast to center field helping Omaha to an early 2-0 lead.
- Omaha added another run to the board in the third inning. Helton tallied her second hit of the game with a double to left field setting up to score. Helton then scored on a single from Jamie White through the left side giving the Mavericks a 3-0 edge.
- The Bears used two hits in the fourth to notch their first run of the game. Villegas doubled down the left field line and scored later on Brockmann's single to center. Omaha responded in the bottom of the fourth with Alexa Sedlak scoring on an Emily Klosterman double.
- UNC used another double in the top of the fifth to tally another run. Young sent one to left center allowing Wenzel to cross home.
- Omaha ended it in the sixth with an explosive inning ending with six runs on three hits. The inning was highlighted by a three-run blast from Sydney Nuismer in the inning's second at-bat. Taylor Johnson capped the game with a three-run walk-off double for the Mavericks. They would run-rule the Bears 10-2 for their fifth win.
Inside the Box Score
- Helton's home run in the first was her first of the season and the first homer at Connie Claussen Field. She finished 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs and two RBI.
- Nuismer's homer was the first of her career. She also set a career-best with three RBI. Nuismer finished a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate.
- The Mavericks finished with 11 hits and nine players recorded at least one hit in the game.
- Sydney Hampton gets the win in the circle improving to 2-5 on the year. Over five innings of work, Hampton tallied two strikeouts. Kamryn Meyer pitched the final inning and added two more strikeouts.
- Friday's game was the inaugural game to be played at the Connie Claussen Field. Connie Claussen threw out the ceremonial first pitch. A field dedication will be held later in the season.
