THIBODAUX, La. – The Mavericks evened their record out Tuesday afternoon with a 4-3 win at Nicholls State. Omaha took the doubles point and tallied three singles points to edge the Colonels. Omaha now sits at 7-7 on the year.
"This was a great way to start our trip," said head coach
Adam Summitt. "For our first match outside, I thought we handled the conditions well. We could start a bit better, but that will come with more playing time outside. It was a great fight and effort up and down the lineup. I'm looking forward to the rest of our trip."
Omaha started out the match picking up the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and 2 spots. Nicholls State took an early edge after winning 6-1 in the No. 3 spot.
Natalie Lorentz and
Marie Kapelevich evened things out with a 6-1 win in No. 2 doubles.
Madison Gallegos and
Ines Absisan clinched the doubles points with a 6-2 win to give Omaha a 1-0 edge heading into singles.
The Colonels tied the match with a singles win at No. 5, but
Brooke Covington and
Natalie Lorentz quickly gave the Mavericks a 3-1 lead with wins at No. 6 and No. 3. Covington downed Pinto, 6-1 and 6-2, while Lorentz won over L. Lopez, 6-4 and 6-2.
Gallegos clinched the match for Omaha finishing next in the No. 1 singles. She beat Maksimovic, 6-4 and 6-2. Nicholls State recorded wins in the final two singles matches, but the Mavericks edged the Colonels 4-3.
Omaha continues its Louisiana road trip tomorrow in New Orleans. The Mavericks will play at 2 p.m. at New Orleans.
