OMAHA, Neb. – The Mavericks dropped a match to crosstown rival Creighton Friday night, 6-1.
Madison Gallegos picked up a win in the No. 1 singles to tally Omaha's lone point of the match.
With the loss, the Mavericks fall to 5-7 on the year.
"Just a tough loss today. Slow start in doubles really was the start of it," said head coach
Adam Summitt. "In singles, we just dug ourselves into a hole and never were able to get out of it. We need to be tough the rest of the season and apply what we are doing in practice in matches."
Creighton took No. 3 doubles to start the match and take an early edge over Omaha. A win by
Natalie Lorentz and
Marie Kapelevich in the No. 2 spot forced the doubles point to come down to the final battle in No. 1 doubles. The Bluejays snuck out a 6-4 win in No. 1 doubles to clinch the point and take an early 1-0 lead.
The Bluejays extended their lead to 2-0 after Lorentz dropped No. 3 singles, 6-2 and 6-3.
Gallegos brought Omaha within one point of Creighton finishing next with a No. 1 singles point. She downed Krueger, 6-2 and 6-4.
Creighton took the remaining four singles points to earn a 6-1 win over Omaha.
Ines Absisan and
Colby Kelley battled for the Mavericks taking their No. 2 and No. 5 singles to three sets, but the Bluejays held on for the win.
Omaha will return to action tomorrow vs. St. Thomas. The match is set to start at 2:30 pm at Miracle Hill. Doors will open at the start of the match for spectators.
