Mavericks Stun Pioneers in Overtime, 5-4

DENVER, Colo. – Junior Tyler Weiss scored at 1:43 of overtime, the final of three unanswered goals, as the No. 9 Omaha hockey team roared back for a 5-4 win over Denver on Saturday night at Magness Arena.

Trailing 4-2 entering the third, the Mavericks got goals from Nate Knoepke and Kevin Conley in the middle of the period to force overtime where Weiss delivered his second winner of the season.

The Mavericks improved to 11-6-1 overall and 11-6-1-3-0 (1) in the NCHC, good for fourth.  The Pioneers, who won the series opener on Friday, fell to 7-10-1 overall and 7-10-1-0-2 (1) in the conference, good for fifth.

Inside the First Period
The game started ominously for the Mavericks when Steven Jandric scored just 26 seconds in.

But the Mavericks tied the game 59 seconds later when Taylor Ward hammered home a face off win by Chayse Primeau for his team-leading ninth goal of the year.

The game stayed tied thanks to sterling penalty killing by the Mavericks who offered DU few chances on a five-minute major given to Nolan Sullivan.

Inside the Second Period
The Mavericks got their first lead of the weekend early in the second.  Brock Bremer set up Jonny Tychonick for a shot from the low slot that beat goalie Corbin Kaczperski at 1:35.

But Justin Lee would score for Denver at 3:25 to knot the game at two.

Lee scored his second of the game to put the Pioneers back in front at 15:15, and Bobby Brink scored with 18 seconds remaining in the period to make it a 4-2 game.

Inside the Third Period
The Mavericks drew to within one off another face off win by Primeau.  Jason Smallidge pushed the puck to Knoepke whose shot beat Kaczperski at 8:09.

Conley tied the game at 11:47, snapping home a shot through the legs of a defender for his seventh goal of the season.

Inside the Overtime
The Mavericks got the winner off a quick transition play at center ice.  Bremer feathered a pass through traffic to Weiss who broke in from the right wing and slipped home his fifth goal of the season.

The Mavericks return home to host Colorado College on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 12-13.
