No. 1 UND Bests No. 9 Mavericks, 7-1

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – No. 1/2 North Dakota scored three power play goals to pull away for a 7-1 win over the No. 9/10 Omaha hockey team on Saturday night at Ralph Engelstad Arena.

The Mavericks lost back-to-back games for the first time this season as UND swept the weekend series.  UNO is now 13-8-1 overall and 13-8-1-3-0 (1) in the NCHC, good for fourth.  The Fighting Hawks, who clinched the Penrose Cup as regular season champions, improved to 17-4-1-2-0 (0).

Inside the First Period
The Fighting Hawks opened the scoring 89 seconds in when Brendan Budy scored from the slot.

The Mavericks answered at 14:25 when Kirby Proctor's shot from the left point ricocheted into the net off Kevin Conley for Conley's eighth goal of the year.

But UND restored its lead when Tyler Kleven took advantage of a turnover at 17:48 to make it 2-1.

Inside the Second Period
Jordan Kawaguchi added a breakaway goal, and both Jasper Weatherby and Collin Adams tacked on power play goals to make it 5-1 after 40 minutes.

Inside the Third Period
Shane Pinto picked up a power play goal, and Adams added his second of the night for the final margin.

Isaiah Saville allowed five goals and made 10 saves before being relieved by Austin Roden who allowed two goals on 12 shots.

The Mavericks return home to host North Dakota for a single game on Friday, Feb. 26 at 7:07 p.m.

GAME NOTES:
  • The series was just the second in 10 regular season series at North Dakota in which the Mavericks have been swept.
  • With less than a minute to go in the third, the game erupted into a skirmish in which five players for each side ended up in the penalty box and Noah Prokop and UND's Gabe Bast were given disqualifications for fighting.  Both will be suspended for next Friday's game in Omaha.

Three stars:  1. Shane Pinto/UND (1-1-2); 2. Jordan Kawaguchi/UND (1-1-2); 3. Collin Adams/UND (2-1-3)
