Women's Soccer Draws with SDSU in Season Opener

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha women's soccer opened 2020-21 action hosting the defending Summit League Champions South Dakota State. The Mavericks out-shot the Jackrabbits, 17-5. Despite the aggressive offense, the teams played to a 0-0 draw through double overtime.

How It Happened
  • The Omaha attack came right out of the gates Friday afternoon with Sophia Green firing off the first shot less than three minutes into the match. Hannah Heinemann would get the next two shots of the match in the seventh minute and 10th.
  • The Mavericks would fire off three more shots before the Jackrabbits even attempted one. Kaycee Manding broke the drought for SDSU near the 20-minute mark.
  • Both teams went on to force saves on back-to-back possessions. Sydney Randall sent the ball to the bottom left of the net, but that was stopped by Taylor Lock in goal. SDSU would take the ball down field and shoot one of their own aimed at the bottom left, ultimately stopped by Madeline Smith.
  • The Jackrabbits got the second half started with a pair of shots in the first ten minutes. Laurin Mertz got her first chance with Omaha's first shot of the half in the 59th minute. Less than ten minutes later, Kaitlyn Cook fired a shot at the bottom center of the net, but it was saved by Hailee Fischer.
  • Fischer made another big stop in goal for SDSU right at the 78-minute mark when Green sent a shot on goal to the bottom of the net. Green and Regan Zimmers each got a shot off in the final minute of regulation, but the game would head to overtime.
  • In the first overtime period, SDSU took the only shot on goal. Rachel Hewitt sent one to the bottom center that was blocked by Smith.
