KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Omaha women's basketball team suffered a 69-59 loss at Kansas City on Friday afternoon at Swinney Recreation Center.
Leaders for Omaha
Claire Killian had a team-high 17 points with eight rebounds and three steals.
Elena Pilakouta shot 5-of-7 from the field to score 13 points.
Josie Filer was the third Maverick in double-figures with 11 points while pulling down eight rebounds.
Leaders for Kansas City
Mandy Willems scored a game-high 23 points behind 7-of-12 shooting from three-point range. Naomie Alnatas added 20 points and connected on five treys. Ravon Nero chipped in eight points with seven rebounds while Taylor Larson notched seven points and five boards.
Team Stats
Omaha shot 44.9% (22-of-49) to Kansas City's 46.2% (24-of-52). The Mavericks forced KC into 16 turnovers while outscoring the Roos 32-14 in points in the paint and outrebounding them, 33-27.
Kansas City shot 16-of-36 from beyond the arc, including 12-of-21 in the second half to outscore Omaha 46-29 in the final two quarters.
Inside the First Quarter
The Mavericks led for nearly the entire first quarter as Filer and
Sophie Johnston teamed up to give Omaha the quick 4-0 lead. Killian buried her first three-pointer of the game to stretch the Maverick lead to 13-8 before KC added a final bucket with 14 seconds left.
Inside the Second Quarter
Pilakouta began the second quarter with an old-fashioned three-point play to give Omaha a 16-10 advantage with 9:40 left. The Roos responded with seven straight points to retake the lead at 17-16 with 7:32 remaining. Omaha reeled 11 consecutive points over the next four minutes, beginning with free throws by
Sarah Schmitt and
Ella Ogier and a trey by Killian. The Mavericks capped the scoring run with a pair of baskets by Pilakouta and Schmitt.
Kansas City scored on two consecutive three-pointers before Filer scored a layup to send the Mavericks into the locker room with a 30-23 lead at the half.
Inside the Third Quarter
The Roos climbed back to go ahead 35-34 with 6:25 remaining before leading 41-36 with 3:42 left. Omaha responded with five points on scores by Pilakouta and Killian to tie the game back up at 41 with 2:19 remaining in the quarter. A free throw, three-pointer and layup over the final two minutes gave KC the 47-41 lead after three quarters.
Inside the Fourth Quarter
Kansas City led off the final 10 minutes with a trey while Omaha added a trey of their own and a layup by Pilakouta to get within 50-46 with 9:08 remaining. The Roos scored on three baskets from long distance to extend the leads to 59-46 with 5:53 left.
Trailing by as many as 18 in the fourth, Killian's free throw and a three-pointer by Filer cut the deficit to 12 with 2:58 left. Kansas City got the lead back to 15 before the Mavericks scored the final five points in the last 90 seconds.
