KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Omaha women's basketball team wrapped up the weekend series at Kansas City, falling 76-66 on Saturday afternoon.
Leaders for Omaha
Claire Killian led the Mavericks in scoring with 14 points.
Sarah Schmitt scored in double-figures for the third time this season with 12 points and had career-high totals of eight assists and seven rebounds.
Elena Pilakouta shot 6-of-7 from the charity stripe while posting 10 points and a team-high eight rebounds on the afternoon.
Akili Felici scored a season-high nine points and shot 3-of-6 from three-point range.
Leaders for Kansas City
Mandy Willems and Ravon Nero each had a game-high 16 points for Kansas City. Naomie Alnatas added 15 points and seven rebounds while Jada Mickens garnered 15 points with three assists and a pair of steals.
Team Stats
Omaha shot 33.9% (19-of-56) to Kansas City's 50% (24-of-48). The Mavericks had an 11-of-29 shooting clip from beyond the arc, including 6-of-9 in the fourth quarter.
For the second game in a row the Mavericks outrebounded the Roos, posting a 35-26 advantage. Omaha outscored KC in points off the bench, 33-9.
Inside the First Quarter
Kansas City led 13-8 before Pilakouta and
Lauren Frost scored on back-to-back baskets to cut the deficit to one at 13-12. The Roos capped the quarter with a 7-0 run to hold an 20-12 lead after the first ten minutes.
Inside the Second Quarter
KC's run continued in the second quarter as the Roos scored the first nine points, stretching the lead to 29-12.
Kia Wilson converted a free throw and Killian buried a trey to trim the deficit before a basket and four free throws by Pilakouta got Omaha within nine at 31-22 with 2:49 left.
The Roos scored a three-pointer and a layup in the final two minutes to grab a 36-24 lead at the half.
Inside the Third Quarter
A pair of baskets from beyond the arc by Felici cut the KC lead to 40-30 with 7:46 left. The Roos expanded the lead to 14 midway through the quarter and scored on free throw with 18 seconds remaining to preserve a 13-point lead after three quarters.
Inside the Fourth Quarter
There was plenty of scoring in the final 10 minutes as both teams combined to score 57 points, with Omaha edging the Roos, 30-27. Trailing by as many as 16, Schmitt and Felici teamed up to score three straight treys for the Mavericks, cutting the KC lead to 60-50 with 5:51 left.
Mariah Murdie went 2-for-2 at the charity stripe with 1:41 remaining and hit a jumper with 58 seconds left to make it a 71-64 game. As a team, the Roos shot 11-of-12 from the free throw line in the final 2:51 to clinch the weekend sweep.
The Mavericks shot 9-of-17 from the field in the fourth quarter while shooting 6-of-9 from beyond the arc.
What's Next
Omaha welcomes North Dakota to Baxter Arena next weekend for the final home games of the season. The Mavericks and Fighting Hawks take the court on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 19-20. Tipoff for both games is set for 3 p.m.
