CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – The Mavericks opened the 2021 season today against Butler at the UNI Dome Tournament. The Bulldogs used a late rally in the sixth and seventh innings to escape with a 2-1 win over the Mavs.
With the loss, Omaha falls to 0-1 on the year.
How It Happened
- Lauren Fey tallied the first two hits of the game with singles in the first and third for the Bulldogs. She would get left on base both times as the teams took a 0-0 score into the fourth inning.
- Ricketts put another hit on the board for Butler with a double in the lead-off position. Three straight outs would bail the Mavericks out of another runner in scoring position.
- Omaha responded in the bottom of the fourth with two hits of its own. Lynsey Tucker hit a single down the left field line to get on base in the opening at-bat. Emily Klosterman and Jamie White would strike out in the inning, but Tucker stole second and was joined by Alexa Sedlak on the bases after she was walked setting up Allison Helton's at-bat. Helton hit a double to center field and tallied an RBI as Tucker gave the Mavericks a 1-0 lead.
- The Bulldogs knotted the game 1-1 with Simpson hitting a solo homer to right field to open the sixth.
- Butler's momentum kept up in the seventh with a double down the left field line by Garcia. Garcia would score the game-winning run as Fey laid down a sac bunt, which forced an Omaha error. The Bulldogs won, 2-1.
Inside the Box Score
- Sydney Hampton made the start in the circle for Omaha. She retired nine batters before Kamryn Meyer came in for relief in the seventh inning. Hampton collects the loss and falls 0-1 to start the year.
- Hampton's nine strikeouts was just one shy of matching her career-high. Meyer tallied two strikeouts.
- Helton finished 2-of-3 at the plate. Tucker and Ross each added a hit.
- Helton's double matches her career-high. She has hit one double in two different games. The last time being vs. New Mexico State last season.
