Late Two-Run Blast Powers Iowa State Past Omaha Softball

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Omaha softball played Iowa State Saturday afternoon for their second game at the UNI Dome Tournament. The Cyclones sealed their fourth win of the year with a two-run homer in the bottom of the fifth improving to 4-0.

Omaha falls to 0-2 with the loss to ISU.

How It Happened

  • The Mavericks came out swinging in Saturday's contest. Allison Helton recorded her second multi-base hit of the season with a triple in Omaha's second at-bat of the game. She scored two batters later when Lexi Burkhardt snuck one through the left side.
  • The Cyclones responded in the bottom of the first with a couple of hits. Sami Williams doubled up the middle for ISU and scored on a home run from Mikayla Ramos a couple of pitches later.
  • Omaha knotted the game 2-2 in the top of the third inning. Lynsey Tucker led off the inning with a single to shortstop. She stole her way to second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch, which prompted a change in the circle for the Cyclones. Tucker went on to score on a sac fly from Burkhardt who tallied her second RBI of the game.
  • ISU only needed the first two at-bats of the fifth inning to take the lead over Omaha and ultimately win the game. S. Ramos led off with a double to left center and scored immediately after with a two-run homer to left center from Spelhaug. M. Ramos would get another double on the board for the Cyclones, but ISU's scoring ended for the inning. Omaha couldn't connect for any more runs allowing ISU the 4-2 win.

Inside the Box score
  • Helton's triple in the first will go down as her first career triple. Helton has now hit multi-base hits in two straight games following Friday's double vs. Butler.
  • Rachel Weber tallied her first hit as a Maverick with a stand-up double in the top of the fourth inning.
  • Kamryn Meyer made the start in the circle for Omaha. She retired seven batters over five complete innings. Meyer's seven strikeouts goes down as a new career best. Her previous high was six set last season vs. Northern Colorado. Meyer falls to 0-1 on the year.
  • Sydney Hampton pitched the final inning for the Mavericks. She tallied two strikeouts.
  • Burkhardt tallied both RBI in Saturday's game, while Tucker and Helton each tallied a run.
