Omaha Adds Two Newcomers to Roster

Dec 21, 2021

Omaha coach Matthew Barlow has announced two additions to his roster for the 2022 season.

Mikhail Korkunov of Gelendzhik, Russia, and Todd Chen of New Taiwan City, Taiwan, will join the Mavericks for their spring campaign, which begins on Jan. 12 with two road matches against Arkansas.

Korkunov is a 6-foot-7 player who was ranked in the top 10 in Russia among players under age 18.

"Mikhail is going to be an impact player for our program." Barlow said. "His height allows for a big serve/forehand combo that will suit our indoor courts well, and he is developing and improving his footwork and movement every day. I know [he] has been looking forward to this opportunity ever since our early conversations in the recruiting process. I am excited for him to get here, and the guys are ready for him to be a Mav."

Chen reached a career-high junior ranking of No. 126 by the International Tennis Federation.

"Todd has already arrived and has been studying English to get ready for the spring semester of classes. [He] has already shown his great attitude and discipline in the classroom, and I am excited to see that translate over to the tennis court," Barlow said. "Todd has had a very successful tennis career already on the ITF Jr. Circuit, and I believe he will continue his success and development in our program."

Omaha finished third in the Summit League standings last season and begins conference play at North Dakota on Feb. 27. The Mavericks host their first home match of 2022 on Jan. 29 against Washburn.

"Overall, the pieces of the puzzle are starting to fit together," Barlow said. "The guys are working hard in the offseason, and I can't wait to show we can compete in the spring."
