KALAMAZOO, Mich. –
Isaiah Saville has had numerous big nights in goal for Omaha.
Saturday night's performance at Lawson Arena might have been his best one yet.
The junior netminder made 41 saves as the No. 14 Mavericks (13-5) blanked No. 4 Western Michigan (13-5) in a National Collegiate Hockey Conference series finale to wrap up the first half of the season.
Chayse Primeau's redirection of a
Kirby Proctor shot in the second period provided all the offense Saville needed in his third shutout of the season. Omaha's penalty kill also denied WMU on five power plays.
"I didn't have to fight through a lot of screens because our D-men did such a good job of blocking a shot or getting guys out of the way to be able to see the shot," Saville said. "All the credit to them, honestly."
Omaha coach
Mike Gabinet said "everybody was great" in the victory, but Saville was tremendous.
"That's the best game I've seen
Isaiah Saville play in a Mavericks uniform," Gabinet said.
Omaha's victory snapped Western Michigan's seven-game winning streak, its longest since 2000-01. The Broncos didn't go down without a fight, however, continually pressing the Mavericks in the final minutes.
Saville made 13 saves in the third period as Omaha hung on despite only having two power-play chances of its own and playing the final two periods without captain
Kevin Conley due to a game misconduct penalty.
Primeau's goal came during 4-on-4 play only 42 seconds into the second period. Proctor fired a shot off a pass from
Taylor Ward that Primeau got a stick on to beat Western Michigan goalie Brandon Bussi, who finished with 25 saves of his own in the low-scoring affair. He denied Omaha on multiple chances.
The Mavericks evened their NCHC record at 4-4 while picking up their biggest win of the season to date with regards to the Pairwise rankings. Because the victory came in regulation, Omaha will get more credit for it than it did in its overtime win over then-No. 1 St. Cloud State in mid-November.
Western Michigan entered the weekend rated No. 1 in the Pairwise rankings.
"They are [up there] in the Pairwise, and it's a hostile environment to play in," Gabinet said. "To come out with a gutsy, do-everything-you-can-to-help-the-team win was a great character win for the group."
