CANTON, N.Y. –
Nolan Sullivan and
Chayse Primeau staked Omaha to a 2-0 lead, but St. Lawrence rallied with three goals in the final 11 minutes to stun the No. 14 Mavericks 3-2 Friday at Appleton Arena.
Max Dorrington, who scored twice, netted the game-winner for the Saints with 4:35 to play – just 43 seconds after Oak MacLeod pulled them even with a power-play goal. Dorrington also had a power-play goal with 11:14 left, when he scored six seconds after the Maverick penalty.
Sullivan broke open a scoreless game 10:16 into the second with an outstanding individual effort while Omaha was shorthanded in a 4-on-3 situation.
Nolan Krenzen sent the puck from the defensive zone toward center ice to Sullivan, who outhustled SLU's Tucker McIntosh to get off a backhanded shot while falling down. The puck went off the post, hit goaltender Emil Zetterquist and then slid across the line.
Primeau, playing in his 100th game with the Mavericks, doubled the lead 3:10 into the third period while the Mavericks were on a five-minute power play. Seconds later, St. Lawrence was whistled for another penalty, giving Omaha a 5-on-3 opportunity. It couldn't capitalize, and the score remained 2-0 until Dorrington found the net six minutes later.
"You could tell it was the first game after the break - a little sloppy out there," Maverick coach
Mike Gabinet said. "We had an opportunity to put them away with the power play there and couldn't get that third [goal]. We knew they'd probably get a few calls in the third, and they did. And they won the special-teams battle."
The loss was only the second in 11 nonconference games for Omaha (13-6), which was attempting to match the single-season program record for wins outside of league play. The Saints improved to 5-8-4.
