Mavericks Jump on Alaska Early to Earn Sweep

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – One night after burying Alaska with a four-goal third-period flurry in its series-opening victory, No. 9/10 Omaha jumped on the Nanooks early on its way to a weekend sweep.

The Mavericks (11-3) scored three times in less than three minutes in the opening period Saturday in their 4-2 win over the Nanooks (1-9) at the Carlson Center. After Cameron Berg opened the scoring 8:03 in, Omaha recorded two power-play goals 66 seconds apart after Alaska was hit with a major penalty.

Connor Mylymock was called for charging and given a game misconduct after he leveled Maverick captain Kevin Conley near the blue line. Ty Mueller scored for the third straight game during the ensuing five-minute power play. Brock Bremer added a 5-on-3 goal shortly after as Omaha took a 3-0 advantage.

"This is a very difficult place to come and play. And we knew they were going to come out hard, which they did," Maverick coach Mike Gabinet said. "To take advantage of that penalty was huge, to capitalize like that. The power play did a good job of getting us on the board there and backing them off a bit."

The Nanooks came out aggressively, and they ultimately outshot Omaha 37-21 in the game. It was the only time in their four meetings this season, all of which were won by the Mavericks, in which they did so.

Alaska pulled within 3-1 on a power-play goal by Garrett Pyke in the opening moments of the second period. But Bremer got the goal back early in the third when he buried a Tyler Weiss power-play pass.

"We knew that they were going to come hard in the third, and it was a two-goal lead at that point," Bremer said. "Getting that three-goal lead is big for a team's momentum, especially in the beginning of the third. It definitely deflates the other team."

The Nanooks did get a goal from Didrik Henbrant with 8:56 to play, but they spent much of the final 20 minutes on the penalty kill. Omaha had five power plays in the third, getting the Bremer goal on one.

Austin Roden made 35 saves while improving to 4-0 on the season. The junior goaltender hasn't lost a game since the final start of his freshman year, going 6-0 since the beginning of the 2020-21 campaign.
