McManus Reaches Milestone in Maverick Win

OMAHA, Neb. – Brannon McManus scored his 100th career point as Omaha built an early 3-0 lead. But it was his 101st that ended up being the difference in a win over Colorado College Friday at Baxter Arena.

The No. 10 Mavericks (12-3) outlasted the Tigers (2-8-3) 4-3 in their first home game in nearly a month, surviving a furious rally by a team that's played plenty of tight games to earn their fourth straight win.

Omaha scored three times in a span of 2:15 in the first period and led 4-0 with 15 minutes left before Colorado College rallied to within a goal in the closing seconds. Still, it left with a sixth one-goal defeat.

McManus set up Tyler Weiss to cap the first-period outburst by the Mavericks. The assist was the 100th career point for the graduate transfer from Minnesota, who recorded 87 of them with the Gophers.

"I've played with a lot of good players. A lot of great players here as well," he said. "I can't thank them enough. I can't thank Weiss [enough] for burying that one either. It feels good. At the end of the day, we have a goal to win a national championship here. Individual success can come from team success."

Jimmy Glynn opened the scoring for the Mavericks 11:08 into the game Friday. Jack Randl quickly doubled the lead by finding the net 64 seconds later. The Weiss goal came only 71 seconds after that.

Omaha's second-period goal, however, wound up as the game-winner. And it was actually the Tigers that scored it.

With McManus closing on him along the boards, Colorado College captain Brian Hawkinson passed the puck toward teammate Nicklas Andrews, who was in front of goaltender Matt Vernon. But it bounced off the skate of Andrews and into the goal. McManus got the credit for it.

"I've never seen that one before," he said. "But that's hockey."

Maverick coach Mike Gabinet said his first-year veteran stood out with his play on his milestone night.

"Tremendous accomplishment, obviously. One hundred points in college hockey is no easy task," Gabinet said. "I thought, just in general, he was good tonight. That's the best I've seen him skate. He was hard. He was winning puck battles. And, sure enough, the results were some point production."

Omaha improved to 3-2 in the National Collegiate Hockey Conference in its first league game since Nov. 13. But it had to survive the final surge by the Tigers, 0-4-1 in the NCHC, to do so. Matthew Gleason's power-play goal, with an extra attacker, pulled Colorado College within one with 31 seconds remaining.

"We kind of gave them life there, so they're going to build off that tomorrow," Weiss said. "They're going to come out flying. We've just got to stick to our game, stick to what we do and get back to our identity and do what we do."

The Mavericks welcomed injured veterans Jonny Tychonick, Chayse Primeau and Isaiah Saville back to their lineup for the victory. Saville finished with 27 saves in his eighth win of the season.
