Omaha Nets 10th Win with Third-Period Flurry

Mavericks Match Record Start by 2015-16 Team

FAIRBANKS, Alaska – No. 9/10 Omaha matched its program record by posting its 10th victory in only its 13th game Friday, rallying past Alaska in a nonconference series opener at the Carlson Center.

The Mavericks (10-3) scored four times in the third period to get by the Nanooks (1-8) 5-2 to equal the feat of their 2015-16 team, which previously stood alone as the fastest UNO squad to reach 10 wins.

Omaha trailed 2-1 entering the final stanza after surrendering a pair of power-play goals to Alaska in the middle frame. Cameron Berg scored twice for the Mavericks in the last 16 minutes as they pulled away.

"We were good in the first period, but I thought we were a little bit loose in the second period and allowed them to get back in the game," Omaha coach Mike Gabinet said. "[That was] a really great response by our guys in the third period to just play the game the right way and not force things."

Omaha pulled even 4:32 into the third when Tyler Weiss, who had opened the scoring in the first period, skated through the Nanooks on a power play and fed Berg for the equalizer. Berg later capped the strong Maverick finish with an empty-netter, earning the first two-goal night of his collegiate career.

"We knew we had to bear down. We knew we had to play our game, come out strong and have a good 20 minutes in the third," he said. "It was time to put the foot on the gas and take control of this game."

Omaha took the lead for good when Joey Abate scored the unassisted game-winner off an ill-fated clearance attempt by Alaska goaltender Gustavs Davis Grigals. With Nolan Sullivan bearing down on him behind the net, Grigals tried to make a pass the other way that ended up on Abate's stick near the net.

"We'd been working all week in practice doing that – rim the puck and goalie forecheck," Abate said. "We knew exactly what to do from a T and saw an opportunity. Lucky enough, the goalie made a good pass.

"It's a weird one. With the angle I got it on initially, if I would've just one-touched it, it probably wouldn't have went in. It was a weird situation where I needed to have a little bit of poise, put it to the backhand and make sure – just follow it in."

Abate's go-ahead goal came 9:06 into the third. Ty Mueller doubled the advantage a short time later when he crashed the net on a Kevin Conley shot during a power play to give Omaha a two-goal lead.

The Mavericks outshot Alaska 28-21 while beating the Nanooks, who were playing their first game in three weeks, for the third time this season. Austin Roden made 19 saves and improved to 3-0 in goal.
