Omaha Scores Six to Win Sixth Straight

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha extended its winning streak to six by scoring six times against Long Island.

The No. 10/9 Mavericks netted five third-period goals to pull away from the Sharks for a 6-0 victory Friday in a nonconference series opener at Baxter Arena. Omaha improved to 6-1 on the season.

Taylor Ward scored twice in a span of 2:23 as the Mavericks opened the decisive frame with 4:09 remaining on a five-minute power play. Tyler Weiss, Kevin Conley and Brandon Scanlin added goals later to provide goaltender Isaiah Saville, who recorded his second shutout, with plenty of offense.

"Our power play got hot there," Ward said. "It was just a credit to us for refocusing. That's one of the things we focus on when things aren't going our way – to refocus and get back to our game."

Omaha led 1-0, thanks to a first-period power-play goal by Brannon McManus, entering the third. McManus fed Ward for his first tally 49 seconds into the period as the Mavericks maintained a man advantage after a major penalty on LIU's Jordan Timmons. Ward then scored again off Conley's assist.

"Our power play as a unit has been pushed in practice to be better," Conley said. "Tonight, we executed more, and it showed out there. It's always good to win the special-teams battle, and I think we did that tonight."

The Mavericks outshot the Sharks (2-4) 32-14 over the final two periods and 41-23 overall. Ward ended up with two goals and two assists while McManus and Scanlin each finished with a goal and two assists.

Omaha was 4 for 9 on the power play, with three of those goals coming in the decisive third period. The strong finish allowed the Mavericks to break open a tight game and keep their winning streak intact.

"It's a similar story to our season so far – very tough games, very physical games," Omaha coach Mike Gabinet said. "Great job by our power play there to capitalize on a five-minute advantage to really kind of give ourselves a cushion."
