OMAHA, Neb. –
Taylor Ward recorded his second career hat trick, and his second consecutive four-point night, as No. 10/9 Omaha extended its winning streak to seven with a 7-1 win over Long Island Saturday.
The senior forward put together an eight-point weekend as the Mavericks (7-1) swept the Sharks (2-5) at Baxter Arena. He scored in every period of the finale while also mixing in an assist in the victory.
Ward's first two goals Saturday came on the power play, as have eight of his 10 on the season. He leads the nation in the category and is already tied for fifth on Omaha's single-season list through eight games.
"I think our power play was clicking this weekend, for sure," he said. "And it's been coming in practice. We've been working on it for a month and a half now. It starts in practice. And we've got five guys on the ice now that are threats to score at all times and work well together."
The Mavericks were 6 for 13 on the power play in the series and were a perfect 12 for 12 on the penalty kill. They even got a shorthanded goal from
Jimmy Glynn Saturday to cap a four-goal second period.
Freshman
Davis Pennington and sophomore
Jake Harrison added their first collegiate goals as Omaha matched a feat last accomplished by its 2012-13 team, which won seven straight games in November.
"I thought that was maybe one of our most complete games this season," Maverick coach
Mike Gabinet said. "We really played to our identity, were smart with the puck, had a lot of sustained [offensive] zone time and both specialty teams were excellent. Just a great, great win. The guys really played well."
Omaha had to come from behind early in the series finale. Marty Westhaver gave the Sharks the lead 23 seconds in by scoring on the first shot of the game. Junior goaltender
Austin Roden, making his first start of the season, bounced back to blank LIU the rest of the way, collecting 16 saves in the victory.
"I know I'm a good goalie," he said. "When you don't play for that long, it's tough to get in there and settle in right away. I felt really good once I settled in. But, obviously, not an ideal start to that one."
Ward, who had a three-goal game against Western Michigan as a sophomore, pulled the Mavericks even three minutes later.
Kirby Proctor then put them in front to stay with a beautiful shot as he skated in from the blue line. The first career goals by Pennington and Harrison highlighted the decisive second.
Ward capped the victory with his final goal 7:05 into the third.
Tyler Weiss had the primary assist on it and on Harrison's in the second.
Brandon Scanlin,
Kevin Conley and Glynn also had two helpers.
