Omaha Extends Win Streak to Five in Sweep

OMAHA, Neb. – Chayse Primeau and Taylor Ward each scored a pair of goals as No. 13/14 Omaha extended its winning streak to five games with a 5-1 victory over Alaska Sunday at Baxter Arena.

The Mavericks (5-1) scored five unanswered goals after falling behind 1-0 and finished a weekend sweep of the Nanooks (1-3) by dominating the final 40 minutes. Primeau notched two goals and two assists while Ward finished with two goals and a helper. Tyler Weiss also picked up three assists in the victory.

"We knew we had to come out in the second period with a response. I think we did that," Primeau said. "Once you saw that we were getting rolling, good things started to happen and goals started to come."

Omaha's five-game winning streak is its longest under coach Mike Gabinet and its first since its 2015-16 team opened the year with six straight wins. It matched its season-best offensive output with five goals.

Ward answered a first-period score by Alaska's Antti Virtanen at 9:20 of the second, one-timing a pass from Weiss past Nanook goaltender Gustavs Davis Grigals. Primeau then put the Mavericks ahead to stay with a second-chance goal 16:58 into the middle stanza, banging home a loose puck in the crease.

The senior followed it up by setting up a buzzer-beating goal by Brannon McManus to make it 3-1 going into the second intermission. The Mavericks outshot the Nanooks 16-4 in the second after a slow start.

"We weren't happy with our first period," Ward said. "I think that we came out and really pushed the pace there in the second and just sort of played to our identity. We just stuck to the game plan, and it just all worked out. It was good to get rewarded for, what we believe, are doing the right things."

Primeau tallied his fourth goal of the season 5:56 into the third to extend his team's advantage. Ward then capped the offensive outburst with his fourth power-play goal, and fifth overall, through six games.

Omaha limited Alaska to nine shots on goal over the final 40 minutes, and Isaiah Saville made 19 saves.

Gabinet said he liked the way his team responded after falling behind for only the second time so far.

"It's always nice when the players realize what's bringing them success," he said. "They start talking about it and holding each other accountable. You know that you're making progress when that happens."
