Softball Clubs Five Home Runs to Salvage Split

EL PASO, Texas – The Omaha softball team clubbed five home runs in a 13-6 victory over UTEP on Friday night. Earlier in the day, the Mavericks suffered an 8-5 loss to New Mexico State.
 
With the split, the Mavericks are now 6-5 on the season.
 
Game One: New Mexico State 8, Omaha 5
How It Happened
  • New Mexico State plated a pair of runs in the first on two bases-loaded walks.
  • The Mavericks tied the game in the bottom half when Taylor Johnson ripped a two-RBI double to left center, scoring Allison Helton and Emma Dargy.
  • Omaha added another run when Janae Cameron reached on an Aggie fielding error, allowing Jamie White to come home.
  • Hailey Bartz followed with an RBI single to left field, scoring Johnson and Omaha led 4-2 after the first.
  • The Mavericks added to the lead in the fifth when Cameron scored on Emily Klosterman's RBI single up the middle.
  • The Aggies cut the Maverick lead to 5-3 on a solo home run in the fourth.
  • NMSU scored five runs in the sixth on back-to-back-to-back home runs to clinch the 8-5 victory over Omaha.

  • Bartz and Klosterman led the Mavericks with two hits each while Johnson garnered a team-high two RBI.

How It Happened
  • UTEP opened the scoring with a three-run homer in the bottom of the first.
  • The Mavericks cut into the deficit in the fourth when Emma Dargy launched a two-run homer to left, scoring White.
  • Omaha grabbed the lead when Diana Murtha blasted a three-run homer to left, scoring Klosterman and Bartz in the fifth.
  • The Mavericks continued the damage in the fifth when White lifted a two-run homer to left center, stretching the lead to 7-3.
  • In the sixth, Klosterman reached on a Miner error and Alex Sedlak raced home from second to plate Omaha's eighth run.
  • The Miners trimmed the Maverick lead to 8-5 on a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth.
  • Allison Helton opened the scoring in the seventh with an RBI single to score Lynsey Tucker.
  • White blew the game open with a three-run shot over the wall in center for her second home run of the game.
  • In the next at-bat, Dargy smacked a solo shot to center to hit her second home run of the game as well.
  • UTEP got a run back in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double.
