Mavericks Edged In Overtime Against Denver, 86-80

OMAHA, Neb. – Omaha women's basketball fell 86-80 in overtime to Denver Saturday evening inside Baxter Arena. 

Denver's (12-14, 6-7) Madison Nelson scored with 0.3 seconds to go and forced overtime, where the Mavericks (6-19, 1-11) ultimately fell by six. 

TEAM STATS 
Denver shot 29-80 (44.4%) from the field, 11-for-30 from three (37.5%) and 17-for-21 (83.3%) from the free throw line. Omaha went 28-for-63 (44.4%) from the floor, 3-for-21 from beyond the arc (14.3%) and 21-26 from the charity stripe (80.8%). The Mavericks had 40 points in the paint with 22 turnovers, while Denver had 24 points in the paint and had 15 points off turnovers. 

LEADERS FOR OMAHA
The Mavericks were led by a quartet of players who notched double-digit scoring efforts. Ella Ogier paced the team with 16 points, followed by Mariah Murdie's 15 and seven rebounds. Both Claire Killian and Rayanna Carter had 14 points apiece. 

LEADERS FOR DENVER 
Denver's Madison Nelson had 21 points and 22 rebounds with three blocks. Lauren Loven tallied a game-high 31 points, which included nine made 3-pointers and a perfect 4-for-4 from the line. Loven also accounted for nine of the team's 11 total threes. Briana Johnson rounded out the team's double-digit efforts with 10 points and six assists. 

INSIDE THE FIRST HALF 
Omaha fell behind 22-15 at the end of the first, but rallied back with a 24-11 second quarter run. The Mavericks cut the deficit to five after a pair of Killian free throws with 5:23 to go in the half. After a Kia Wilson steal, the lead was cut to one at the 3:47 mark when Ogier knocked down a pair from the line and then made a quick layup. At the half, Omaha eventually led by six (39-33). 

INSIDE THE SECOND HALF 
Throughout the third quarter, Omaha had its largest lead of 10 on two separate occasions. The Mavericks built a 48-38 advantage at the 5:44 mark in the quarter on a Carter layup, and later led by 10 again (50-40) with 4:31 left in the frame. Denver, however, cut the lead to seven with a buzzer-beating jumper by Briana Johnson. The fourth quarter saw five ties and four lead changes alone.  After Denver's Madison Nelson made a layup to put the Pioneers up 71-70, Murdie was fouled and gave Omaha a 72-71 lead after she knocked down both from the line. With three seconds to play, Murdie was fouled again and split from the line, which gave the Mavericks a 73-71 lead. 

Denver called timeout and advanced the ball to mid-court. On the ensuing possession, the team found Nelson, who scored with 0.3 left on the clock and forced overtime. 

INSIDE OVERTIME 
In the five-minute span, Omaha was outscored 13-7 as Murdie and Josie Filer both fouled out. The Pioneers eventually built a 3-point lead after Meghan Boyd hit a long three. Omaha tied the score at 77-all later in the game on Carter's jumper with 2:06 to go, and later again at 79-all after Wilson's layup. Denver's Loven, however, knocked down her ninth three of the game and gave the Pioneers the cushion they needed for the win. From there, Omaha was forced to foul and saw Denver hit four-straight free throws for the 86-80 win. 

UP NEXT
